The advantages of using extra-wide fabrics for your patchwork and quilting projects are that your quilt backings will be one single piece and you will avoid the hassle of having to piece normal width fabrics together to cover the back of your larger projects. This also means extra-wide backings are a more cost-effective way to back large projects. We use good quality patchwork fabric on the back of our quilts - why would you want to use a sheet or poly-cotton on the back when you have used 100% cotton fabrics on the top? Using good quality, 100% cotton backing fabric will dramatically improve the look, feel, and lifetime of your finished quilt. The same applies to your quilt waddings.
To work out how much backing fabric you need we recommend adding 6" to the final measurements of your patchwork quilt top - for example, if your quilt measures 76" x 88", we recommend your backing piece should measure at least 82" x 94" - those extra few inches will allow you to put the layers together more easily and for any shrinkage during the quilting process. It is always better to have too much than too little!
Quilters Quest fabric is sold in
multiples of ¼ meters (10"). The price shown is per quarter metre. To order the quantity you need, simply enter the number of quarter metres in the Qty box. For example: if you would like 3 meters of a 108" extra wide fabric
simply enter '12' in the quantity box (12 x ¼m = 3m, 12 x 10" = 120"), this means you will
be sent a piece of this fabric measuring 120" x 108" (3m x 2.75m).
